Today we continued presenting our book reports and projects. We were glad we had the chance to see many different genres including mystery, fantasy, non-fiction. The student's reports were very informative and their projects were amazing.
We also attending a Civil War play in Wo Learning Center. There, fourth, fifth and sixth graders put on a dramatic performance that taught us how the Civil War began. Today we started sharing our book reports and presentations. We also went to Dillingham Hall to see the play, Beauty and the Beast. We loved the performance. We will use our background knowledge of fairytales to make a connection to the story we heard.
Today we went to our chapel class. There, we sang many songs with Chaplain Mederious such as Make New Friends and the World is a Rainbow. We also saw a short play called Rain, Rain, Rain by the Creative Drama class. We also learned the origins of the Chapel and how it was built upon a lily pond.
Today we had a students from the Magic class show us some of the awesome tricks they can do. We were amazed by their fantastic performances.
This week, we learned about the mystery and suspense genre. We read a book called Piggins and the Royal Wedding by Jane Yolen, and applied what we know about mysteries. We know that mysteries have a problem or crime to solve, a protagonist who solves the mystery, clues, a wrongdoer and innocent suspects.
We made spy glasses in which we had to write a summary and evaluation of the book. We also had to find the elements of the story including the setting, main characters, problem and solution to the story. We have started to read our class chapter book, Calvin Coconut Trouble Magnet by Graham Salisbury. Fourth-grader Calvin lives near the beach in Oahu with his mom and little sister. Mom likes to call Calvin her “man of the house.” But Calvin’s not great at being the man of the house, or taking care of his responsibilities. He’s too busy bouncing around with his friends and trying to avoid Tito, the tough kid. Trouble Magnet is the first book in a series for younger readers, full of all the fun of growing up in Hawaii. It introduces a wonderful multiracial cast of characters, including Mr. Purdy, who calls his fourth-grade class Boot Camp; Uncle Scoop, who runs the lunch wagon at the beach; Ledward, Mom’s 6’7″ boyfriend; and gorgeous, cynical, intimidating, 15-year-old Stella-from-Texas, who arrives to be Mom’s live-in helper—and to step all over Calvin’s turf.
If your child enjoys the book, he or she might consider reading other books from the series-Zippy Fix, Dog Heaven, Zoo Breath, Hero of Hawaii, Kung Fooey, Man Trip, Rocket Ride, Extra Famous Awards:
Today we visited the Ing Learning Center. Mrs. Johnstone, the librarian shared fantasy books with us. We also had the chance to borrow books if we finished the ones we checked out last week. In class, we read the Witch's Walking Stick, a fantasy book and discussed the elements of the fantasy genre. We also read Calvin Coconut chapter 3.
We are off to a great start in Reading Workshop. We are starting to make our Big Books which we will use to compile our genre projects. This week, the students will be learning about folklore, fairytales and fables. |
